The Late-Great Patriot Act
"I'm way more nervous about joining ranks with the NYTimes, Ted Kennedy, John McCain, Nancy Pelosi, Al Franken, Jacque Chirac, and Osama Bin Laden, than I am about Uncle Sam reading my library card"
by Tom Marsland
The Senate is playing hardball in refusing to continue on with the Patriot Act. For some odd and unknown reason, it's difficult to discuss this law rationally with either side. Without this controversial legislation we are at least more marginal in our war on terror, and with it many fear constitutional mayhem, and since I have libertarian leanings myself, I too am concerned over potential maltreat of civil liberties.
But then I read the passionate hatred Democratic leadership espouses for the Patriot Act, as do terrorists, as does the ACLU, as do leftists in Europe, and do U.S. Senate RINO's (Republicans in name only). So I say to myself; self! (don't worry, I never answer back) these disparate but frequently aligned groups are wrong on almost all matters of conscience and values, and ofttimes disturbingly harmonious in their politics too. So what am I missing here?
